How to read a VIN
A VIN isn't a random string — every one of its 17 characters is encoding something specific. You can run any VIN through the decoder to get the full breakdown instantly, but knowing what's actually being decoded makes the result a lot more useful. Here's what each section means.
Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
The first three characters identify the manufacturer and country of origin. The first character alone narrows it to a region — VINs starting with 1, 4, or 5 are built in the United States, 2 is Canada, 3 is Mexico, J is Japan, K is Korea, W is Germany, and so on. The second and third characters narrow it down to the specific manufacturer and, sometimes, vehicle type or division.
Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block is manufacturer-defined and typically encodes body style, engine type, transmission, and trim series. There's no universal standard here — each manufacturer sets its own scheme for these five characters, which is exactly why a decoder needs to reference manufacturer-specific tables rather than a single formula.
Position 9: Check digit
This single character (0–9 or the letter X) is calculated from every other character in the VIN using a weighted formula defined by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It exists purely to catch transcription errors — if you mistype or mis-scan a VIN, the check digit almost always won't match, which is a fast way to catch a bad read before you act on it.
Position 10: Model year
A letter or number representing the model year. This cycles on a repeating pattern roughly every 30 years, so the same character can represent multiple years across a vehicle's production history — which is why decoders cross-reference it against the manufacturer and other VIN data rather than reading it in isolation.
Position 11: Plant code
Identifies the specific assembly plant that built the vehicle. This is manufacturer-specific — the same letter means a different plant depending on the manufacturer.
Positions 12–17: Vehicle Identification Section (VIS)
The final six characters are typically the vehicle's sequential production number — essentially, the count of that specific vehicle off the assembly line. This is what makes each VIN unique even among identical trims built the same year at the same plant.
Why some VINs won't decode
The 17-character format has been standard in the U.S. since 1981. Older vehicles used shorter, non-standardized VINs that don't fit this structure and generally won't return results in modern VIN decoders, including this one.
